The Hobart Run The Bridge takes great pride in announcing its new industry leading ‘Green Project’ today.
As the largest fun run in Tasmania, we’re doing our bit to be environmentally sustainable and todayhave announced the following measures;
1. 4000 finisher medals have been made from Tasmanian Oak timber, by local business Xanderware. This replaces the metalmedals that were previously imported from China.
2. For every entrant in the City of Hobart 10km event, a tree will be planted.
3. All cups used at the two drink stations will be BioCups, which will be collected and taken toa City of Hobart composting site.
4. Plastic bottles will be replaced by aluminium cans for all finishers, thanks to Hartz.
“Our participant survey from the 2019 event showed that environmental factors were a growingconcern. We looked at ways we can make achange and we think we’ve come up with a number of industry leadinginnovations,” Race Director Richard Welsh said.
“We’re particularly proud of using a local manufacturer and local timber resources to produce ourmedals. This has been 6 months of planning and we believe it’s the first event of this size in Australia to provide a sustainable medal. If people don’twant it, they can literally throw it in the compost, but we think they will beeven more sought after,” Welsh said.
The event uses 6000cups, which in the past were plastic. These will now be replaced by plant based bioplastics and composted post event.
At the moment 1200people have entered the City of Hobart 10km, with up to 1500 expected to line up.
“Hobart Run The Bridge is owned and organised by local small business Epic Events and Marketing. We genuinely care for the environment we live in and this is something we can do to not just limit our waste, but reduce our footprint and care for future generations. Planting around 1500 trees is a significant contribution from just our event,” Welsh added.
